UK’s burglary hotspots revealed

A list of the country’s burglary hotspots was revealed recently, with Leeds residents thought to be at most risk.

The survey, which was carried out by MoneySupermarket.com, used the details of nearly 3.5 million insurance claims to produce the information. The list placed the LS13 area of Leeds at the top, with the Bradford area of BD12 closely behind.
Following the top two on the list were RM3 in the Essex town of Romford and the M30 area of Manchester.

As well as the list showing the areas with the highest risk, it also uncovered the areas in which people were less likely to fall victim of burglary. Those with the lowest risk were the LA14 area of Cumbria, the SA62 area of Pembrokeshire and the SA9 area of Swansea.

Moneysupermarket.com considered the users who had claimed on their policies for burglary in the last two years. It then calculated the total claims in 1,000 inquiries – meaning the postcode areas could be compared.

Commenting on the results, Hannah Jones of Moneysupermarket.com said:

“While there are clearly some areas of the country with a higher proportion of insurance claims for burglary than others, this doesn’t actually mean the area is ‘rife’ with crime.”

Jones went on to say that those living in the high-risk areas are likely to see premiums rise by as much as 20%. It is also expected that those owning high value properties will pay more.

One way homeowners can combat the risk of burglary is to equip their properties with extra security, such as roller shutters, mesh grills and window bars.
